Dieser Zauber ermöglicht es dir, eine mächtige Rune auf eine Oberfläche einzuschreiben. Wird es ausgelöst, vernichtet ein Symbol des Todes eine oder mehrere Kreaturen innerhalb von 18 m (behandle dies als Explosion[link2]), deren gesamte Trefferpunkte nicht über 150 liegen. Zuerst werden die am Nächsten befindlichen Kreaturen getroffen. Kreaturen mit zu vielen Trefferpunkten werden übersprungen. Ist das Symbol ausgelöst worden, wird es aktiv und leuchtet. Es währt 10 Minuten pro Zauberstufe[link3] oder bis es Kreaturen mit insgesamt 150 Trefferpunkten betroffen hat. Kreaturen, welche den Bereich betreten, in dem das Symbol aktiv ist, unterliegen seiner Wirkung, auch wenn sie sich nicht in diesem Bereich aufgehalten haben, als das Symbol aktiviert wurde. Eine Kreatur muss nur einen Rettungswurf[link4] gegen das Symbol machen, solange sie sich in seinem Bereich aufhält. Verlässt die Kreatur das Gebiet aber und kehrt zurück, während das Symbol noch aktiv ist, muss sie auch einen erneuten Rettungswurf[link4] machen.

Das Symbol des Todes ist inaktiv, solange es noch nicht ausgelöst wurde (es ist aber sichtbar und ab einer Entfernung von 18 m erkennbar). Um effektiv zu sein, muss ein Symbol des Todes zu sehen und an einer hervorstechenden Stelle angebracht sein. Wird es bedeckt oder versteckt, wird es ineffektiv. Erst wenn die Bedeckung wieder entfernt wird, wird das Symbol wieder wirksam.

Ein Symbol des Todes wird aktiviert, wenn eine oder mehrere der folgenden Bedingungen eintreffen (deine Wahl): eine Kreatur schaut die Rune an, liest sie, berührt sie, passiert sie oder ein Tor, auf das die Rune angebracht wurde. Egal welche Auslösemethode, bzw. -methoden du dir ausgesucht hast, kann das Symbol erst aktiviert werden, wenn eine Kreatur sich ihm auf mehr als 18 m nähert (dies gilt selbst dann, wenn die Kreatur die Rune eigentlich auslösen würde, weil sie diese zum Beispiel gelesen hat). Ist der Zauber gewirkt, können die Auslösebedingungen des Symbols nicht mehr geändert werden.

Im Falle[link5] dieses Zaubers bedeutet „lesen“, dass jemand versucht, die Rune zu studieren, zu identifizieren oder ihre Bedeutung zu erfassen. Wird etwas über das Symbol gelegt, um es unwirksam zu machen, wird es ausgelöst, wenn es auf Berührung reagiert. Du kannst ein Symbol des Todes nicht offensiv anwenden. Ein Symbol des Todes etwa, das durch Berührung ausgelöst wird, wird nicht aktiviert, wenn es auf einem Gegenstand angebracht wurde, der dann benutzt wird, um eine Kreatur zu berühren. Außerdem kann es nicht auf eine Waffe angebracht und aktiviert werden, wenn man mit der Waffe einen Gegner trifft.

Du kannst dir auch eigene Auslösebedingungen ausdenken. Diese können so einfach oder kompliziert sein, wie du möchtest. Sie könnten auf dem Namen, der Identität oder Gesinnung[link6] einer Kreatur basieren, müssen aber von beobachtbaren Handlungen oder Eigenschaften abhängen. Nicht fassbare Eigenschaften, wie etwa Stufe, Klasse[link7], Trefferwürfel und Trefferpunkte gelten nicht.

Wenn du das Symbol des Todes niederschreibst, kannst du ein Passwort oder einen Satz festlegen, welcher es einer Kreatur ermöglicht zu verhindern, dass die Rune ausgelöst wird. Wer das Passwort einsetzt, ist immun gegen den Effekt des Symbols, solange er sich innerhalb von 18 m in der Nähe der Rune aufhält. Wenn der Betroffene den Bereich verlässt und später wiederkehrt, muss er das Passwort erneut aussprechen.

Des Weiteren kannst du eine Anzahl von Kreaturen auf das Symbol einstellen. Dadurch verlängert sich aber möglicherweise der Zeitaufwand für den Zauber. Stellst du nur ein oder zwei Kreaturen auf die Rune ein, steigt der Zeitaufwand so gut wie gar nicht. Stellst du eine kleine Gruppe auf das Symbol ein (bis zu 10 Kreaturen), erhöht sich der Zeitaufwand auf 1 Stunde. Stellst du eine große Gruppe auf das Symbol ein, erhöht sich der Zeitaufwand auf 24 Stunden pro 25 Kreaturen. Wenn du noch größere Gruppen auf die Rune einstellst, erhöht der Zeitaufwand sich proportional. Eine Kreatur, die auf das Symbol des Todes eingestellt ist, kann es nicht auslösen und ist immun gegen seine Effekt, selbst wenn es sich im Bereich eines aktivierten Symbols des Todesaufhält. Du selbst giltst automatisch als auf das Symbol eingestellt – du bist immun gegen die Effekte und kannst es nicht auslösen.

Magie lesen[link8] ermöglicht es dir, ein Symbol des Todes zu identifizieren, wenn dir ein Wurf auf Zauberkunde[link9] (SG 10 + den Zaubergrad des Symbols) gelingt. Ist das Symbol aber so eingestellt, dass es ausgelöst wird, wenn es gelesen wird, wird es durch diesen Vorgang aktiviert.

Ein Symbol des Todes kann mit Magie bannen[link10] entfernt werden, wenn der Zauber einzig und allein auf die Rune zielt. Austilgen[link11] hat keinen Effekt auf das Symbol. Zerstört man die Oberfläche, auf welcher das Symbol angebracht wurde, zerstört man das Symbol, löst es aber auch aus.

Symbol des Todes kann mit Hilfe von Dauerhaftigkeit[link12] permanent gemacht werden. Ein permanentes Symbol, das deaktiviert wird oder die maximale Anzahl an Trefferpunkten betroffen hat, wird 10 Minuten lang inaktiv und kann dann erneut ausgelöst werden.

Anmerkung: Magische Fallen[link5], wie eben ein Symbol des Todes, sind nur schwer zu entdecken und auszuschalten. Ein Schurke[link13] (und nur ein solcher) kann seine Wahrnehmungsfertigkeit[link14] einsetzen, um ein Symbol des Todes zu finden, und Mechanismus ausschalten[link15], um es auszuschalten. Der SG liegt in beiden Fällen bei 25 + Zaubergrad, bzw. bei 33 für ein Symbol des Todes.
