Die Ätherebene


Die Ätherebene ist der Sitz der emotionalen Mächte, das nebelverhüllte Heim von Spukerscheinungen und Schrecken und der immer präsente Übergang zwischen den Welten der Inneren Sphäre. Die Ätherebene existiert neben den Ebenen, durchdringt sie zugleich und ahmt größtenteils deren Aussehen und Orte nach, wenn auch mit stark reduzierter Sichtweite dank der treibenden Nebelbänke und der langsam auf- und absteigenden, verblassenden Lichtschichten, die an das Innere eines Gewittersturmes erinnern.

Von der Ätherebene aus erscheinen diese angrenzenden Welten vernebelt und unwirklich, als schaue man durch Milchglas. Umgekehrt können Bewohner der benachbarten Ebenen nicht in die Ätherebene blicken, es gibt aber manche Sterbliche, die mit übernatürlicher Sensibilität gesegnet oder verflucht und zuweilen in der Lage sind, Blicke auf die Ätherebene zu werfen. Da die Ätherebene von den anderen Ebenen der Inneren Sphäre aus unsichtbar ist, können Kreaturen unter der Wirkung von Zaubern wie Ätherische Gestalten[link1] oder Ätherischer Ausflug[link2] ebenfalls nicht von Kreaturen gesehen werden, die nicht selbst ätherisch sind. Normalerweise können auch Kreaturen auf der Ätherebene Kreaturen auf der Materiellen Ebene nicht angreifen oder umgekehrt.

Auf der Ätherebene liegen verzerrte, undeutliche Versionen von Orten, welche sich mit ihren Gegenstücken in der Inneren Sphäre überlappen. Zusammen mit der vor Ort herrschenden Gewichtslosigkeit von Kreaturen entsteht daraus eine starke Versuchung, unbekannte Orte auszuspähen, indem man auf die Ätherebene wechselt und dort durch körperlose Wände schreitet und über Fallen hinwegschwebt. Dem stehen aber die Einheimischen der Ätherebene entgegen, deren Präsenz derartige „Spaziergänge“ erschwert oder gar hochgefährlich macht, so dass Vorstöße auf die Ätherebene meist auf sehr kurze Ausflüge hinauslaufen. Zu den gefährlichsten Bedrohungen dort gehören die blutroten Xill – kriegerische, ebenenwechselnde Externare[link3], welche ihre Eier in lebenden Sterblichen ablegen. Doch auch die grässlichen, kichernden Nachtvetteln nutzen die Ätherebene als Abkürzung zur Dimension der Träume[link4], wo sie in Albträume eindringen, um sterbliche Seelen zu entführen.

Die meisten Bewohner der Ätherebene sind die verzerrten Überreste sterblicher Seelen. Einige Seelen, die durch den Tod von ihren sterblichen Hüllen befreit werden, bleiben dennoch aufgrund heftigem emotionalem Stress an die Materielle Ebene[link5] gebunden und können den multiversalen Strömungen nicht folgen, um in den Fluss der Seelen einzutreten und zum Beinacker[link6] zu gelangen, solange diese Bindung noch besteht. Je länger diese Seelen daran gehindert sind, ihre Reise ins Nachleben anzutreten, desto mehr werden sie von der Ebene der Negativen Energie[link7] angezogen und desto mehr Erinnerungen und Teile ihrer Persönlichkeit werden durch emotionale Ausbrüche und mentalen Schaden zerstört. Diese Seelen manifestieren sich schließlich als körperlose Untote, wobei Schreckgespenster und Todesalben am häufigsten sind.

Spiritisten wenden sich an die Geister der Ätherebene und öffnen ihren ihre Bewusstsein als Zuflucht. Mit Übung und der Hilfe eines ausgebildeten Spiritisten kann ein Geist auf angrenzenden Ebenen sogar wieder seine alte Gestalt annehmen, indem er sich in Ektoplasma hüllt, jene geisterhafte Substanz, die als Schleier zwischen den Welten fungiert. Diese Geistführer werden unter Kundigen des Okkulten als Phantome bezeichnet, sie sind dem Spiritisten, an den sie gebunden sind, treu, doch auch die emotionale Verbindung zur Ätherebene bleibt stark und manifestiert sich in Eifersucht und heftigen Ausbrüchen selbst bei den sanftesten Seelen. Das ektoplasmatische Wesen der Ätherebene selbst ist hochgradig empfindlich für die Gedanken und Gefühle ihrer Bewohner. Daher wird die ätherische Version eines Ortes nicht nur durch dessen tatsächliche Dimensionen und Äußerlichkeit bestimmt, sondern auch von den Erinnerungen und Eindrücken der Geister, die dort umgehen. So könnte zum Beispiel auf der Ätherebene ein altes Herrenhaus immer noch so aussehen wie zu der Zeit, als die dort spukenden Geister noch gelebt haben. Sollten diese Geister ihre letzte Ruhe finden, wird das Abbild nicht mehr von ihren Erinnerungen aufrechterhalten, so dass das Gebäude zu der Ruine wird, zu der es in der Realität mittlerweile zerfallen ist. Manche körperlose Geister sind mit der emotionalen Natur der Ebene sogar derart eng verstrickt, dass sie imstande sind, diese ektoplasmatischen Abbilder an überlappenden Orten auf einer angrenzenden Ebene zu manifestieren und so vorübergehend in eine beunruhigende Reflektion einer früheren Version zu hüllen.

Ebenso wie Orte in der realen Welt überlappende ätherische Spiegelbilder besitzen, haben sterbliche Kreaturen ätherische Doppelgänger in ätherischer Gestalt, die ihre realen Gestalten überlagern. Diese ätherischen Doubles sind Gefäße für den kosmischen Lebensodem, welcher einer Kreatur ihre belebende Kraft verleiht – man kennt diesen Odem auch als Ki. Diese Energie sammelt sich in sieben brennenden Wirbeln aus farbenfroher Energie, den Chakren, welche das ätherische Double und den physischen Leib zusammenhalten und an beide Lebensenergie verteilten. Diese Energie strahlt sogar noch anderthalb bis einen Meter über die Außenfläche des Körpers hinaus, um die Aura der Kreatur zu erzeugen. Eine Aura ist ein Nimbus aus bunter okkulter Energie, der viel über den Zustand und die Gefühle der Kreatur verrät.

Das ätherische Double, die Aura und die Chakren einer Kreatur sind nur für jene sichtbar, welche über das Wissen dazu oder die passende Magie verfügen. Auf der Materiellen Ebene kommt dabei der esoterische Einsatz der Fertigkeit Wahrnehmung[link8] durch eine Kreatur mit dem Talent Okkulte Sensibilität*[link9] zum Tragen, es gibt aber auch einige Zauber. Auf der Ätherebene dagegen muss man sich nur konzentrieren, um die Interaktion dieser Kräfte zu beobachten – wenn du weißt, wonach du Ausschau halten musst, wird es problemlos sichtbar. Das Interpretieren dieser Information ist natürlich ein gänzlich anderes Thema. Ein ätherisches Double ist in violettgraues oder blaugraues Leuchten gehüllt. Im Gegensatz zum mittels Astralprojektion erzeugten Astralleibes oder eines Traumleibes in der Dimension der Träume ist ein ätherisches Double aber normalerweise nicht imstande, als eigenständiger Träger des Bewusstseins zu fungieren.

Schlussendlich ist die beeindruckende Weise der Ätherebene auch die Heimat zahlloser Taschenrealitäten, welche als Halbebenen bekannt sind. Viele dieser einzigartigen Reiche sind die Privatdomänen mächtiger arkaner Zauberkundiger, die Spielplätze schwächerer Götter, die Experimente der unergründlichen Elohimi oder die Kerker von Kreaturen, welche eine derartige Gefahr für den Kosmos darstellen, dass sie niemals freigelassen werden dürfen.
