Innerhalb dieses alternativen Systems besitzt eine Kreatur keine Rüstungsklasse[link1] (RK[link1]), sondern einen Verteidigungswert. Der Verteidigungswert ähnelt der Berührungs- RK[link1] in den normalen Pathfinderregeln, addiert aber den Schildbonus (sofern vorhanden, plus den Verbesserungsbonus des Schildes), sowie den Verbesserungsbonus der getragenen Rüstung hinzu.
Verteidigung repräsentiert, wie leicht oder schwer es ist, eine Kreatur zu treffen. Der Schildbonus wird hinzuaddiert, da wir davon ausgehen, dass eine Kreatur wann immer möglich versucht, Angriffe aktiv mit ihrem Schild abzublocken. Aktiv ist eine Kreatur immer, wenn sie ihren GE-Bonus[link3] auf die RK[link1] addieren kann und nicht auf dem falschen Fuß[link4] angetroffen wird.
Verlust des GE-Bonus auf die Verteidigung: Situationen oder Effekte, die zum Verlust des GE-Bonus[link3] bei deiner RK[link1] führen würden, führen stattdessen zum Verlust des GEBonus bei der Verteidigung. Wenn du deinen GE-Bonus[link3] bei der Verteidigung verlierst, verlierst du zudem die Fähigkeit, angemessen mit deinem Schild auf Angriffe zu reagieren (und damit den Schildbonus).
Auf dem falschen Fuß: Wenn du dich auf dem falschen Fuß[link4] befindest, erhältst du weder deinen GE-, noch deinen Schildbonus bei der Verteidigung. Dasselbe gilt, wenn du deinen GE-Bonus[link3] verlieren solltest. Deine Verteidigung auf dem falschen Fuß[link4] entspricht daher deiner Verteidigung minus GE-Bonus[link3] und Schildbonus.
Benutzung eines Schildes, ohne mit diesem geübt zu sein: Wenn eine Kreatur im Umgang mit dem benutzten Schild nicht geübt ist, erleidet sie den Rüstungsmalus des Schildes als Malus auf den Schildbonus neben allen anderen Mali für die Benutzung eines Schildes, ohne damit geübt zu sein. Dieser Malus wird auch angerechnet, wenn sie auf dem falschen Fuß[link4] angetroffen wird, da der Schild nun mehr im Weg ist, als dass er Angriffe abwehrt.
In diesem System behalten Rüstungen ihre normalen Spielwerte und Eigenschaften. Der Rüstungsbonus (und alle darauf addierten Verbesserungsboni und alle auf den natürlichen Rüstungsbonus addierten Verbesserungsboni) wird allerdings zu SR/Rüstung konvertiert. Die Schadensreduzierung[link5] einer Rüstung entspricht ihrem Gesamtrüstungsbonus mit einem Bonus von +1 für jeweils 5 Stufen oder Trefferwürfel (Maximum +4 auf die SR mit der 20. Stufe oder für 20 oder mehr TW), sofern die Kreatur auch im Umgang mit der getragenen Rüstung geübt ist.
Ungeübt im Tragen der Rüstung: Kreaturen, die Rüstungen tragen, mit denen sie nicht geübt sind, erhalten keinen stufen- oder TW-basierenden Bonus auf ihre SR und erleiden alle sonstigen Mali für das Tragen einer Rüstung, mit der sie nicht geübt sind.
SR/Rüstung: Die Art von SR wehrt je nach Zusammensetzung der Rüstung den Schaden aller Angriffe ab, welche normalerweise von einer SR betroffen wären (siehe Tabelle: Rüstungszusammensetzung und SR[link6]). Im Gegensatz zu den meisten Arten von Schadensreduzierung[link5] ist SR/Rüstung mit anderen Arten von SR kumulativ. Wenn ein Charakter beispielsweise gegen ein Skelett[link7] mit SR 5/Wuchtwaffenschaden und SR 4/Rüstung (+2 aufgrund von Rüstung und +2 aufgrund natürlicher Rüstung) kämpft, reduziert die SR/Rüstung des Skelettes[link7] den Schaden jedes Angriffes, der nicht mit einer Wuchtwaffe ausgeführt wird, um 9 Punkte und den Schaden aller Wuchtwaffen um 4 Punkte. Magische Waffen und die Angriffe von Kreaturen der Größenkategorie Groß oder größer umgehen die SR 4/Rüstung, nicht aber die SR 5/Wuchtwaffenschaden.
Natürlicher Rüstungsbonus und SR: Wie der Rüstungsbonus wird auch ein natürlicher Rüstungsbonus zur Schadensreduzierung[link5] konvertiert. Sollte eine Kreatur eine Rüstung tragen und über einen natürlichen Rüstungsbonus verfügen, addiert sie beide Boni zusammen, um ihre SR/Rüstung zu bestimmen (siehe Tabelle: Konvertierung natürlicher Rüstung zu SR[link8]).
Sollte zum Beispiel eine Kreatur ein Kettenhemd[link9] +2 tragen (SR 6/Rüstung) und Ziel von Rindenhaut[link10] eines Druiden[link11] der 6. Stufe werden (natürlicher Rüstungsbonus +3), steigt ihre SR auf SR 9/Rüstung für die Wirkungsdauer des Zaubers. Diese SR wird von Adamant[link12] oder den Angriffen von Kreaturen der Größenkategorie Groß oder größer umgangen.
Eine Kreatur, die über SR aus einer anderen Quelle als Rüstung und einen natürlichen Rüstungsbonus verfügt, erhält die Effekte einer verbessertes Form von SR, ähnlich wie sie die Zusammensetzung der Rüstung besondere SR/Rüstung Verteidigungen verleiht (siehe Tabelle: Rüstungszusammensetzung und SR[link6]). Sollte eine Kreatur eine magische Rüstung tragen und eine natürliche Rüstung und SR besitzen, wählt sie die beste Form des besonderen Schutzes, den sie durch ihre Rüstung und die Mischung aus SR und natürlicher Rüstung auf ihre SR/Rüstung erlangt.
Sollte zum Beispiel eine Kreatur Adamantrüstung[link12] tragen, natürliche Rüstung und SR/Magie besitzen, wirkt die SR/Rüstung der Kreatur als SR/- und kann nur von Kreaturen der Größenordnung Gigantisch oder größer überwunden werden, da die Adamantrüstung[link12] die bessere Schadensreduzierung[link5] bietet.
Ungewöhnliche Kreaturen und SR/Rüstung: Gestaltlosen/amorphen und körperlosen Kreaturen fällt es leichter SR/Rüstung zu überwinden. Wenn sie eine Kreatur mit SR/Rüstung angreifen, behandeln sie in der Regel diese SR als einen Bruchteil der SR/Rüstung. Angriffe von körperlosen Kreaturen ignorieren die SR vollständig, solange die SR nicht einem Energieeffekt oder einer Rüstung mit der Eigenschaft Geisterhafte Berührung[link13] entstammt. Diese Eigenschaften sind in Tabelle: Ungewöhnliche Kreaturen und SR/Rüstung[link14] zu finden.
Unter diesem alternativen System wird kein Bestätigungswurf für eine kritische Bedrohung ausgeführt. Stattdessen führt das Ziel des kritischen Treffers einen Kritischen-Verteidigungswurf durch. Ein Kritischer Verteidigungswurf ist 1W20 + Bonus in Höhe der SR der Kreatur + GE-Modifikator[link3] (bis zum maximalen von der Rüstung gestatteten GE-Modifikator[link3]) + die Summe aller Ablenkungs- und Schildboni auf den Verteidigungswert.
Dem SG des Wurf legt das Würfelergebnis der kritischen Bedrohung zugrunde. Auf dieses wird der halbe Grundangriffsbonus des Angreifers addiert, die Anzahl der Kritischer-Treffer-Talente, über welche der Angreifer verfügt (Maximum 10), sowie ein Bonus abhängig vom Größenunterschied zwischen Angreifer und Ziel, sofern der Angreifer größer ist.
Sollte beispielsweise eine mittelgroße Kreatur von einem Armbrustbolzen getroffen werden, den ein mittelgroßer Kämpfer[link15] der 6. Stufe mit zwei Kritischen-Treffer-Talenten abgefeuert hat, und der Angriffswurf[link2] eine natürliche 19 ergeben, liegt eine kritische Bedrohung vor. Das Ziel des potentiellen Kritischen Treffers führt nun einen Kritischen-Verteidigungswurf gegen SG 24 durch, um den Kritischen Treffer in einen normalen Treffer umzuwandeln.
Sollte das Ziel Lederrüstung[link16] +1 tragen, GE 18 haben und eine Tartsche[link17] +1 verwenden, hätte es einen Bonus von +9 auf den Kritischen-Verteidigungswurf, um den Kritischen Treffer in einen normalen Treffer umzuwandeln. Bei einem Wurf von 15 oder höher wird der Kritische Treffer zu einem normalen Treffer reduziert und das Ziel erleidet den normalen Schaden, welcher um seine SR reduziert wird. Hätte der Armbrustschütze eine 20 gewürfelt, müsste sein Ziel eine 16 oder höher würfeln, um den Kritischen Treffer in einen normalen Treffer umzuwandeln.
Bei einem gescheiterten Kritischen-Verteidigungswurf erleidet das Ziel des Kritischen Treffers den Schaden des Kritischen Treffers. Dieser Schaden wird aber immer noch um die SR des Zieles reduziert.
Rüstungen mit der besonderen Eigenschaft Bollwerk: Die besondere Rüstungseigenschaft Bollwerk[link18] kommt zum Tragen, wenn der Kritische-Verteidigungswurf scheitert.
